Are You Ready To Be Seen?
Growing up, I was the kind of kid who flew under the radar. Someone actually came up to me during my ten-year high school reunion and asked if I was in his class. Um, yes. I sat behind you for four years.
If the refrain “Speak up! Come out of your shell!” or my personal favorite, “What are you, mute?” seems familiar, you are not alone. How do we step out from beneath the invisibility cloak, especially when it’s so nice and safe and cozy underneath there? It helps if you can, like the alcoholic, hit bottom. Not a drunken table-dance kind of bottom, just a point where the pain of being invisible starts to feel worse than the humiliation, doom, and despair that potentially awaits if you begin to show your authentic self.
If you feel like you’re ready to wade through the terror, stay tuned. I’ve compiled a few of my favorite tips to help you on your journey and I'll share them with you next week. Until then, try to remeber Brené Brown's words:
"Vulnerability is about showing up and being seen. It's tough to do that when we're terrified about what people might see."
